LYTLE, Texas – After a year of working, rehabbing and building toward another title, 2020 Ultimate Bullfighers world champion Chance Moorman left Fort Worth, Texas, last December with disappointment melting off his face.
“I lost the world title to Knox Dunn last year, and it lit a fire under me,” said Moorman, the No. 1 man in the UBF standings. “I’ve spent four years to build this, and to lose everything last year just made me want to work harder for it. I’ve been to the gym at least two hours a day building for this again.”
Everything he’s doing helps, and the proof comes with the $69,000 he’s earned in regular competition. He owns a lead of $37,300 over the No. 2 man, Dekevis Jordan.
“I’m in a really good spot right now,” Moorman said. “I’m handling my bulls well and making the best of it. I hope I can continue that until December.”
He’s talking about the UBF World Finals, which will return to the legendary Cowtown Coliseum in the famous Fort Worth Stockyards. It may have been the place of one of Moorman’s greatest defeats seven months ago, but it’s also the home of one of his biggest triumphs.
In May, he snagged $50,000 after winning the Fort Worth Freestyle Finale inside Cowtown Coliseum.
“Mentally and physically, that just boosted me,” he said. “It was the cherry on the top. It was only halfway through the year, but that win was just what I needed. I was 92 in the long round and 93 in the short round. Doing that was unlike anything else, and $50,000 will help anybody; $50,000 is life-changing money.
“At the same time, even with winning all that money, you’ve got to stay humble.”
If it’s not the bulls helping the first UBF champ stay humble, it’s the competition. Those he’s competing against are also his friends, and that just helps push his drive.
“There are a lot of young guys that are really good, and everybody’s just super handy,” Moorman said. “You can be 91.5 in the short round, and someone can come behind you and be 93. I prefer to be later in the short round, because you can see what you’ve got to do.
“The pressure from the other competitors just drives you to be better.”
